The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is reporting that more than 85,000 medical documents have been sent through the agency’s electronic submittal system since the program debuted last September. In reporting its year-end statistics, CMS says the total number of submissions represents 5.5 percent of all medical records requested in the past year by review contractors looking for improper payments.

CMS says that more than 1,778 Medicare providers are using its Electronic Submission of Medical Documentation (esMD) and that 21 review contractors have been approved by the agency to accept medical records via esMD.

Among other statistics reported by the agency said that 16 Health Information Handlers(HIHs) had been certified by CMS to offer esMD services.

Providers contract with HIHs to supply them with esMD services much the same way they contract with claims clearinghouses to supply them with claims submission services, according to CMS, which has posted its report on their website.
